The two islands of the Thracian sea, Samothraki and Thassos are the furthest north of the Greek Islands. This geographical separation may contribute to the fact that these two islands have a very different feel and atmosphere than the other Greek Islands. The Thracian Islands are very laid back featuring pine forests, hidden charming villages and rugged hillsides. The true highlight of the Thracian islands is the incredibly gorgeous coastal water.
Thassos and Samothraki, however have many individual characteristics that set each island apart from the other. Thassos for example is the home of several very nice beaches. The best of which are located on the south east portion of the island, such as Astris, Potos, Pefkari, Limenaria, and Trypiti. The island’s best beaches have been said to be Alyki and Golden Beach. Alyki is composed of two coves back to back.
Samothraki is a very tranquil island with crystal clear azure waters. Samothraki has one sandy beach on the island; pebbly beaches are much more frequent here and each features a truly unspoiled coastline. Pahia’ Ammos known as Ammos to the locals is the sandy beach. As is common for the Greek Islands, Samothraki features ancient ruins and other historical antiquities. What is not so common is that ruins of the Sanctuary of the Great God are found here, representing an extremely important center of the ancient world. Samothraki is also known as the site where the Winged Victory goddess, Nike sculpture was discovered.
Each island offers visitors an opportunity for relaxation and peace. The hospitality of these islands' natives will make anyone feel welcome. There is so much to explore on each of the Thracian Islands that guests often stay for weeks at a time and often much more!
